Kalimpong to Samthar
Samthar is about 80 km from Kalimpong. We reached it by
travelling by jeep and on foot. At two points along our
driving route, we set off with our guide to walk for about
3 to 4 hours down through farms and villages, rice and
millet terraces and across the ravines while the car took a
much longer route (in distance) to meet us. One of the
walking sections was to avoid having to ride over about 20
km of very rough road.
At Samthar we stayed at Samthar Farm house where we sampled
'chang' the local form of millet beer, were entertained by
Nepali village dancers and enjoyed conversation and the
hospitality of General Jimmy Singh.
